Lady Antebellum are hard at work on the follow-up to their multi-platinum sophomore CD, ‘Need You Now,’ and the trio may be getting a little misty-eyed about the past on the new disc.
Lady A have teamed up again with writer Josh Kear (who co-penned their mega-hit ‘Need You Now’) for a tune on the new collection called ‘Dancing Away With My Heart,’ a song about those butterflies that come with first love. Apparently, that sentimental tune set the reflective tone of album number three for the group.
“We all remember high school dances and how innocent those little moments were,” Lady A’s Charles Kelley tells Entertainment Weekly. “There’s gonna be a lot of nostalgic songs on the record. Maybe that’s just because we’re all getting a little older.”
Charles also reveals that the hectic pace of superstardom has all three missing their salad days just a bit, and longing for those anonymous, uncomplicated fun times of their youth. “Now we’re so busy and there’s a little part of us that yearns for a time when it was a little simpler. I don’t know what fueled that.”
While Charles and his bandmate Dave Heywood had a chance to actually go back and attend their 10-year high school reunion this past year, they were too busy to take the trip down memory lane with their classmates. But, says Charles, “we did make a little video for ‘em saying we missed ‘em and hoped everybody was doing well.”
To ensure they had time to write and would end up with more great songs this time around, Lady A brought many of their co-writers out on the road with them during last year’s tour. Tom Douglas, who co-penned ‘I Run to You,’ and their current single, ‘Hello World,’ makes the cut again this time around with a song called ‘Heart of the World,’ which Charles says has the trio really excited. “We believe so much in that message and so much in what that song says,” Dave told the Boot. “Hillary [Scott] had that song on her iPod. Someone had given it to her two or three years ago when she was going through a little bit of a rough time. She played it for us, and it was literally a piano and Tom’s vocal on it. It almost brought all three of us to tears. We knew that’s the song that we were looking for. That’s what we wanted to say and be affiliated with … that kind of message.”
They’re also talking about including a collaboration on the new project, which would be a first for the group. And though they’re off the road and in the studio for a month or two, they obviously can’t stay away from the stage for too long. They’ll perform a benefit for the W.O. Smith Music School at Nashville’s Wildhorse Saloon February 18. The school provides affordable music lessons to underprivileged kids from low-income families throughout Middle Tennessee.

Lady Antebellum are facing a huge challenge as they enter the studio to record their third album, and the pressure of following up the second best-selling album of 2010 is not lost on Charles Kelley and his bandmates. Fresh off the massive success of their smash hit ‘Need You Now,’ the trio are heading back into the studio this week to begin cutting songs, and instead of recording while on the road this time around, they blocked out two months to focus solely on the music. And though they’ve become superstars and been insanely busy non-stop since they made their last record, remarkably, they say they actually feel more prepared to record this time around than ever.
“We actually just decided we’re going to take two, two and half months straight in the studio to create this thing and not have all this distraction. Hopefully that will be a good thing,” Charles tells Entertainment Weekly. “I always laugh and say that I thought we worked good in the chaos, and that was why it worked. We’ll see if having too much time, what that does to us. Hopefully it’s gonna make the process more enjoyable and not so stressful.”
Charles says the three were “pretty tenacious” about writing songs for this project while out on the road over the past year, even inviting local songwriters out on the road with them to keep the motivation level up. And though they penned about 50 songs for the album, they have realistic expectations about duplicating the success of a mega-hit like ‘Need You Now.’
“If we were to use the success of ‘Need You Now’ as the barometer for every other song, then we’ll probably be highly disappointed. That song will probably undoubtedly be the biggest song of our career. We can hopefully have success for 20 years, but we may not ever have the success of that one particular song again. But we might. You never know. But we’re gonna try not to chase it, is what I’m saying. If we try to chase that too much we’ll start to deviate from what made the sound of the group.”

Darius Rucker famously left the Grammy-winning group, Hootie & the Blowfish, to launch his own career as a solo artist in country music. It was a gamble that paid off for the 44-year-old, earning him a CMA Award, two No. 1 albums and five top five singles. But the Charleston native says he will someday return to the group that started it all.
“Country music is my day job, I want to make country records,” he tells The Boot. “I think Hootie & the Blowfish will always be a band. I’m sure there will be another record, another tour. It’s going to happen.”
But for the time being, there’s another group that Darius would like to tour with. “In my perfect world, I’d probably go out with Lady Antebellum,” he reveals. “I think a double-headlining bill with Lady A would be a lot of fun.”
Asked if he can imagine what his life would be like if he hadn’t made the jump to country music, he admits it’s difficult. “I have no idea,” he admits. “I don’t know. I’d still be playing.”
Already a star in his own right, Darius earned millions of new fans thanks to his gig as opening act for Brad Paisley on the H20 World Tour. The experience prompted Darius to consider taking his own show on the road. “Brad Paisley really spoiled me,” he acknowledges. “I’d like to play some of my own shows in the next year and see what happens.”

Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott is spreading vocal holiday cheer beyond the country trio this holiday season. The singer-songwriter has recorded a duet with songwriter Dave Barnes called ‘Christmas Tonight,’ and the video, filmed in Los Angeles, stars a familiar face.
Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, best known for her roles in ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer,’ ‘Party of Five’ and most recently, ‘Ghost Whisperer,’ stars in the clip, along with her writer-director boyfriend, Alex Beh. The pair play a pair of lovers who are set to attend a holiday party, but he is trying everything to get her to celebrate with him at home … which they eventually do despite all of her protests.
The actual tune, an updated version of ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside,’ appears on Dave Barnes’ new holiday offering, ‘Very Merry Christmas,’ which also contains several classic tunes, such as ‘I’ll Be Home for Christmas’ and ‘All I Want for Christmas is You,’ along with a handful of original tunes written by the acclaimed singer-songwriter.

They’ve quickly become one the world’s most successful musical trios, but fame and stardom haven’t spoiled the members of Lady Antebellum. The group’s Dave Haywood says using his newfound star power to help gain entry into elite places or events is something he personally avoids at all costs.
“Literally, I do everything in my power to never do that,” Dave tells The Boot. “I hate when people do that. It kills me! Honestly, if I walk up somewhere and if they don’t know [who I am], I just don’t deal with it and I leave. I would rather not do something than do it because I tell them something like that. If I need to look like a [jerk] doing it, I’m not going to do it [laughs].”
Fame, however, does come with its share of pros and cons. “I think the worst is your time is not so much your time anymore,” Lady A’s Charles Kelley tells The Boot. “Right now, it’s also the stage of the career that we’re at. We’re at that stage where you have to go, go, go, go, go! There are times where we naturally get a little burned out and just want to have a few days to sit at home, watch TV and just relax and just check out. Your mind never really gets to check out.”
“The pro is at the end of the day, getting to wake up and do what you love,” Charles continues. “It’s a small price to pay. With anything you do in life, there are days where you’re worn out and you don’t want to do it for a second. Honestly, we’ve been given the golden ticket here and so we’re going to try to run with it and appreciate it and realize that it doesn’t happen often.”
Lady Antebellum’s latest single, ‘Hello World,’ is currently climbing the country charts. The group finish 2010 as Billboard’s Top Country Songs Artist and Top Country Album Artist, with their multi-platinum ‘Need You Now,’ the year’s Top Country Album.
